Frantz Fanon & Stand Up to Racism

Komarine Romdenh-Romluc

Wed 25 March 2026 · 2pm - 4pm

Frantz Omar Fanon is one of, if not the, most important anti-colonial thinkers of the twentieth century. Fanon, along with many others, argues that colonialism is not simply a physical system of inequality and oppression, but also a framework for categorising people and relating them to one another in social space. Under colonialism, Fanon suggests, race becomes the central system through which people are organised and understood.

In this seminar, philosopher Komarine Romdenh-Romluc will speak about the life and work of Frantz Fanon, focusing on his analysis of race, colonialism, and social relations. This will be followed by an in-conversation discussion with Stand Up to Racism activist Nahella Ashraf, exploring the significance of Fanon’s ideas for contemporary anti-racist struggles.

Philosophy in Prisons

Jon Bebb & Leonie Smith

Sat 25 April 2026 · 2pm - 4pm

The Philosophy in Prisons (PiP) charity works to bring philosophical practice and dialogue to prisoners across Britain, with the aim of deepening critical thinking skills and building stronger communities between prisoners.

In this seminar, Leonie Smith and Jon Bebb (Chair and Vice Chair of the PiP advisory board) will deliver a workshop session demonstrating the kinds of philosophical work they have been engaging prisoners in. This will be followed by an in-conversation session with Gavin Kelly (HMP Stafford), where they will discuss the transformative impact philosophy has had on prisoners participating in the programme and, more broadly, the potential of philosophy to fuel resistance and liberation.

Human Rights and Resistance

Human Rights & Resistance

Barbara Arneil

Wed 27 May 2026 · 2pm - 4pm

Barbara Arneil is Professor of the Global History of Anti-Colonial Thought at the University of British Columbia. In this seminar, she will discuss the evolution of human rights and explore how they have functioned both as tools of resistance and as tools of marginalisation and oppression.

Following her talk, there will be an in-conversation discussion with student activist Rishi Milward-Bose (People & Planet), considering the relationship between rights and more radical modes of political resistance. Together, they will discuss the advantages and limitations of rights-based systems when seeking to overcome oppression.
